In the world of weddings, the word EXPERT is severely overused. It seems that everyone and their mother thinks they are an expert. If someone simply gets married these days, they start calling themselves a "wedding expert." Hey, I remember this one time I went to the store and purchased some flowers. Now I call myself a "floral expert." When I wanted to write my own vows, I had people telling me I should hire a "wedding vow specialist" to help me word them correctly. Huh? They are MY words, I think I can figure out how to phrase them so they make some sort of sense without having to pay some word geek a fee of $50 per sentence or some ridiculous thing. So in the end, I did not hire the specialist. And guess what? Our vows turned out just fine.

The wedding industry wants you to believe that you are not capable of doing anything yourself; that you desperately need help. You need a wedding planner, a makeup expert, a ceremony expert, a dance instructor, a bridal assistant; the list goes on and on. At this rate, after all the planning, you might need a therapist too. The bottom line is that there are many of these such experts; some of quality and others, not so much. You need to decide which of these things; if any, are important to you. You can plan your wedding on your own. I did. Right down to the last favor. The question is, do you WANT to? Some people prefer to have some experts in their planning process; or at least some good old fashioned help. So if you are one of those Brides or Grooms, then I did a little bit of homework for you and found some books that may help you with your wedding planning process. Since most wedding planning type books seem to suck, I could only find a few that were not mind - numbingly annoying or very old-fashioned. So if you’d like a bit of entertainment, help, or fun; check these out:

"It’s My Wedding" by Jean Ramsden and Corinne Weldon

This book is kind of cool. Instead of simply giving you some ideas of what to do during wedding planning, this included several "real" stories from actual brides who have already gone through it. In each story, there is a crisis of some kind that the bride describes; and then tells the story of what happened. After each tale, a solution from various "experts" is offered as to how they would have dealt with that issue. It is fun to read, and after reading some of these stories, it will make you feel better about your own somewhat tame situations.

My brother explained that he and the bridal party were late because of a traffic jam on the main road to the church, due to an overturned truck. After frantically rerouting most everyone around the accident – thank goodness for cell phones – the bridal party and guests arrived with just a few minutes to spare before the scheduled start. I was worried that the priest, who was visiting our parish for the month, would be upset about all the delays. But, he was the one that couldn’t be found! I soon discovered that he was over an hour away dealing not only with the same traffic jam, but car troubles. This was my second phone call of the day! In my third phone call, I reached our regular parish priest who was at the airport on the way to his vacation. Thankfully, he reached our deacon, who filled in at our now hour-late ceremony. So, at least we had a priest, even though we did cut some sections and we were charged a late fee by the reception hall.

Oh, and one more thing. As I stepped down from the altar to exchange vows, I tripped over the stairs. I thought this was just par for the course of the day, but the chaos leading up to the ceremony actually ended quite romantically, however. My new husband was quick on his toes – perhaps after all the waiting around! – and caught me in his arms. Right on time.

The back of our reply cards listed a number that corresponded to our master guest list so we could keep track of people in case someone forgot to write in their name. A few weeks after we sent the invites, I received three replies with names I had never even heard of. When I checked the numbers on the back to see who they belonged to, it became clear to me that my mother-in-law had added three distant relatives’ names to her own invite, even after we initially allowed her to provide 25 guest names. When I called to talk about the extra guests, she insisted these relatives be invited. My husband and I were furious. He told his mother that since the extra places put us over budget, she had to pay for them. As you can probably guess, we have not seen the money to this day. - Ellen

HOW TO MAKE IT ABOUT YOU:

Darn, you did everything right! Numbering the invitations is a wonderful idea, listing the exact number of allowed guests, an even greater idea. Unfortunately, superb planning won’t stop others from being selfish. You accommodated your mother-in-law’s extras and you were assertive in asking for her to pay for them. If she hasn’t yet paid up, don’t expect her to.

Friendship - from car to CAReer!
Meet Jean Ramsden, KD from Omega Chi/Cornell and her dear friend Corinne. Jean is being featured this month in the AA-E not only for her work in children’s entertainment and as an author - but most importantly this September for her interesting tale of friendship. As we celebrate National Women’s Friendship Day this year, may we celebrate all the magic that comes from within the hearts of women and manifests itself in goodness for all.

Jean and Corinne were once strangers, two women living in the same state, at the time and having career paths that might intertwine. Through a chance meeting, geographical coincidence and the magic of friendship, their relationship grew. It started out as just carpooling, but the friendship that blossomed from a daily commute was just the beginning for these two young women. Three hours, two women, one car, then factor in lots of emotion, unlimited sharing and a friendship that would be tested, tried and triumphant, and "Welcome to Jean and Corinne’s life."

"How did Corinne and I become friends? Well, it actually started during my interview with Warner Bros.! Corinne was interviewing me for a creative position and we just clicked. I eventually was offered and took the job, and we discovered that we both lived close by AND equally far from work (1.5 hrs. each way). So, we started carpooling" said Jean.

Although Corinne and Jean hardly knew each other, it wasn’t long before 99% of their three-hour-a-day commute centered on the intimate details of their upcoming nuptials. From the minute they got into the car, they listened, traded stories, and relied on each other for advice and support. "For month after month, our weddings were basically all that we talked about during the daily 3 hours on the road!" joked Jean, "We got married within 3 mo. of each other."

The two gal-pals continued their friendship, even when Jean moved abroad to England for 2 years. Eventually, they fit in time to chat about writing the book. Once Jean was back in the US of A, and home in Los Angeles, the two got more serious about their creative project and 4 years later, they published the book!

"Corinne and I like to tell people that we became friends because of our weddings, confided Jean. During our commute time we found that we "stopped talking about the trivial traffic and the weather, and started sharing intimate details and emotions related to our upcoming nuptials, which were a few months apart. We also offered each other girlfriend-to-girlfriend advice and support, as we were truly experiencing a lot of the same issues. Most importantly, we reminded each other about what was most important about our weddings. Not matching tablecloths, not the perfect veil, or not the best DJ in the world, but weddings that were consistent with how we wanted to celebrate ourselves and our fiancé’s love. "

"The process of actually writing and publishing a book, as well as marketing it, is so much more challenging than simply thinking about it. Corinne and I never worked directly with each other at Warner Bros., so a "working relationship" was brand-new. It was hard at times when we stumbled upon roadblocks or had disagreements. We had to figure out how to move forward without harming our friendship."

"Our rule is that we always place our friendship first. We have followed the same advice we give brides in "It’s MY Wedding!" Brides aim to have the wedding of their dreams, and we tell them to go for it, but to also remember what’s most important… love." While the two friends had high aspirations of having a huge success with the book, sometimes they found they just needed to forget about the details and focus on what really matters most… their friendship!

"We have now seen two sides of each other — friendship and co-worker. And because of that intimacy, we have come to both respect and understand each other on such a greater level."

"We were so fortunate to have each other as friends and we only wished other brides-to-be were able to replicate our experience. Sure, brides-to-be are bombarded we books on etiquette and planning, but how many get to dish with other women in the same hectic wedding situations? So, we came up with the idea of creating a book filled with real wedding stories and the same straightforward girlfriend-to-girlfriend advice that we gave each other as friends. It’s MY Wedding! gives brides-to-be 101 Ways to Make Your Wedding About You," said Jean.

Jean in now considered as well experienced in the wedding planning venue, orchestrating her own international wedding that included guests from 9 months to 90 years who hailed from seven different countries. A wedding for some, a strategic nightmare for another, this whole wedding planning concept was right up Jean’s alley. Having produced media for all ages, Jean is well versed in delivering projects on time, within budget and under pressure, as well as in dealing with devilish details and diva-like attitudes. Her first taste of event planning came as events chair and president of Kappa Delta. Who would have thought that years later those innocent initial leadership and management skills learned in the KD house would become so very important?

Jean began her career as a research associate for the Center for Research on the Effects of Television (CRETV) Children’s Group measuring young children’s responses to television content. After receiving her Master’s Degree in children’s educational media development from Harvard, Jean joined PricewaterhouseCoopers Entertainment practice as a Consultant specializing in children’s entertainment, where she evaluated the opportunity for a children’s format at a leading educational television network. Jean left PWC to join MXGtv.com, (major shareholder USA Networks) an entertainment startup for teen girls and young women. There she was Director of Creative Affairs, and produced 10 live-action digital television shows in the genres of entertainment, fashion, sports, music and lifestyle. She then joined Warner Bros. Online, where she produced live-action/animated television shows and films and developed international theatrical marketing. In addition to a Master’s from Harvard, Jean holds a B.S. with distinction from Cornell University. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter."

Jean’s dear friend and now co-author, Corinne was a member of over a dozen wedding parties before she finally marched down the aisle as the bride. When it came time to plan her own wedding (at the ripe "old" age of 37!), she thought it would be a breeze, as she has tons of experience dealing with people’s behavior and organizations. As president of the Coral Gables, Florida Junior Chamber, Corinne managed several hundred volunteers and planned charity events. She has worked in human resources for over twenty years where she has admittedly, "seen it all." She holds a B.S. from the University of Phoenix. Corinne resides with her husband and son in Los Angeles, California.

The fruit of the friendship includes the book these two girlfriends wrote, "It’s MY Wedding!" The paperback book presents 101 hilarious, heartbreaking, theatrical, and sometimes unbelievable testimonials from real women (and a few men!) who have gone through the wedding planning process, from engagement to the big day. Following each anecdote, the authors present sane, human and helpful advice for prospective brides and grooms with the goal of reminding readers about the one thing that is truly important during the wedding process… love! Corinne and Jean wrote the book as the perfect gift for engaged couples, prospective brides, their friends, family and members of the bridal party. Universal in its appeal, the book is unique in the "how-to" wedding advice category. Instead of quizzes, planning tips and advice, budgeting secrets, wedding etiquette, wedding toasts or wedding vows, the authors present readers with the same straightforward, girlfriend-to-girlfriend stories and advice that they offered each other when they used to trade war stories about their upcoming nuptials. Nicknamed The Bathroom Book For Brides, the book is not only entertaining and insightful, but easy to pick up and put down- ideal during the often hectic wedding planning period!
